The 17th U.S. Infantry is a living history military reenactment unit portraying a Regular Army infantry regiment of the War of 1812. The unit is comprised of individuals who have a great interest in our nation's past and wish to broaden their knowledge of soldier life through reenacting. Every effort is made to present a historic impression, with uniforms and equipment which are origional or authentic reproductions. Members participate in battle reenactments at actual historic sites, present educational programs, take part part in parades, and provide living history demonatrations. Many members also enjoy speaking to local schools to make history come alive for the students.
Members must be 16 years of age to bear arms but may particapate as musicians at a younger age if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Women are welcomed to particapate in roles which are approiate for the period of the War of 1812 but for the sake of authenticity, do not bear arms.
The uniform and personal equipment are provided by the individual ar his expence, but the company owns and provides much of the general camp equipment. Nominal dues are paid to cover mailing costs and other expences at the discretion of the unit. Members are not required to attend any minimum number of events, but rather may particapate according to their own level of interest.
The unit holds regular meetings in the Erie Pa. area during the fall and winter months. Due to heavy campaigning in the spring and summer, meetings are frequently held at events.
Although we portray a military origanization, our intent is to have fun and enjoy each others company. The 17th U.S. Infantry provides an environment for developing camaraderie and sharred historical experiences through the accurate interpertation of the life of the American soldier during the War of 1812.
The 17th U.S. Infantry is looking for dedicated recruits interested in joining one of the most authentic 1812 units and taking the "extra step" to do it as best as it can be done. Join Us.
