Walter Butler was the son of John Butler. He was the senior Captain in the Rangers until his death. This company was the first to be recruited, even though he was held prisoner by the rebels until the early spring of 1778. It is not known who succeeded to the command of his company when Butler was killed in action at West Canada Creek in 1781. The company probably saw action in all the major expeditions of the war in New York and Pennsylvania.
