Butler's Rangers

Lieutenant Colonel John Butler's Company

This was the 10th company of Rangers to be raised. It was mustered complete on 8 August 1781, and although John Butler was the nominal company commander, Benjamin Pawling, a Captain-Lieutenant, assumed command of the Colonel's company. Pawling was a farmer from Philadelphia. He made his way to Niagara via New York, Halifax and Quebec City. He was commissioned Captain 25 Oct 1778. The company probably saw action on Major John Ross's raid into the Mohawk Valley in the fall of 1781. After the war Pawling settled in Niagara and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and commanded the 1st Regiment, Lincoln Militia.

This company is currently reserved for descendants of the actual members of Butler's Rangers.
